This past July, Parents’ magazine tallied a total of 48 expectant celebrities in 2011. The list featured a handful of first-time moms, and A-listers from Hollywood and the music scene. But there were three that stood out for maintaining a strong eco-friendly lifestyle. Check them out below, and see why they earned a “green thumbs up” for their efforts.
1. Natalie Portman
Two months before winning her Best Actress Oscar in February for her role in the psychological thriller “Black Swan,” Natalie Portman made headlines when she annouced that she was engaged and expecting her first child with dancer Benjamin Millepied. The 30-year-old, who welcomed son Aleph in June, reverted to being a vegetarian for her pregnancy (Portman’s been a vegetarian since she was a child, and switched to being a vegan in 2009), stating that she was “listening to my body to have eggs and dairy.”
She gets a green thumbs-up for: Patterning her philosophy on vegetarianism and natural living to meet the nutritional needs of her body and baby. She also gets plus points for being an animal rights advocate, and for successfully launching her own line of vegan footwear.
2. Alicia Silverstone
She’s a true Hollywood “green girl.” From her promotional work for PETA to launching her own line of sustainable, eco-chic makeup brushes, Alicia Silverstone is the ultimate green celeb who truly practices what she preaches. Two years ago, her book “The Kind Diet” was released, which is a helpful primer for those who want to get into the vegan lifestyle. (It’s packed with lots of vegan recipes, too, and was a consistent New York Times Bestseller.) Silverstone readily kept fans up to speed about her pregnancy over on her blog, The Kind Life, where she regularly posted updates about prenatal yoga. In May, she and husband Chris Jarecki welcomed their son, Bear Blue Jarecki, whom Silverstone delivered naturally.
She gets a green thumbs-up for: Successfully practicing veganism all throughout her pregnancy and breastfeeding, blogging about how to eat a vegan diet as a breastfeeding mom, and for using hand-me-down or thrifted maternity clothes during her pregnancy.
3. Jessica Alba
I had a hunch Jessica Alba would be an eco-lover ever since she splashed into the scene on the Flipper TV series during the mid-90s. (Yes, I’m that old.) Today, Alba continues to nurture her aspirations for a truly green yet glam family lifestyle. She made conscious, eco-friendly renovations to her home, and according to Treehugger.com, her children’s nursery is the ultimate enviro-chic baby haven, furnished in formaldehyde-free repurposed wood furniture, and using low-VOC paints. This year, she and hubby Cash Warren welcomed their second daughter—Haven Garner—into the world on August 13.
She gets a green thumbs-up for: Being consistent in her beliefs as a truly environmentally-friendly individual, both as a mom and as a homemaker. She drives a Prius so she can lessen her carbon footprint, and according to Celebrity Baby Scoop, her home features upcycled design features, such as carpets made from old tennis balls and wastebaskets made from potato chip wrappers!
