Detox diets: Beneficial or dangerous?

A few weeks ago, my older sister embarked on a detox cleanse. She wanted to lose weight, gain energy, and strengthen her immune system for the onslaught of cold season. She gave up almost all food groups (except vegetables and whole grains), swallowed 24-30 vitamin pills daily, and drank an expensive (but tasty) shake each morning. After a few days of this detox regimen, she felt pounds lighter but far too tired for her busy life with three children. Eventually, she grew so hungry that she binged on a large order of fried chicken, only to become sick a few hours later.

This anecdote is only one of many. Thousands of people are turning to detox diets to cleanse their systems and lose weight. But what is the science behind these restrictive diets?
